Friday's GIANT Newspaper
Because of the threat of severe weather, Thursday evening's planned visit to the Lincoln National Guard base was canceled. The Boys' State Bulletin staff suddenly found itself with a great deal of free time, and used it to produce a staggering 22-page newspaper, the largest Boys' State Bulletin ever.

Tornado Warning Disrupts Evening Assembly
Heineman speech cancelled as nearly 800 shelter in basement
(from the Boys' State Bulletin)
Wednesday night’s joint session of Boys’ State and Girls State was cut short by severe weather. Although the assembled delegates heard the planned band concert and got a surprise visit from Husker football coach Bo Pelini, Governor Dave Heineman’s speech was called off.
Because of the possibility of severe weather, the hundreds present in Kimball Hall were briefed on tornado evacuation procedures as the event began around 7:30 p.m.
The program went as planned until about 8:35 p.m., when the tornado warning was issued. Staff members flashed the lights in Kimball and interrupted a song by the Boys’ State-Girls State chorus to announce the evacuation.
Everyone quickly moved to the basement and remained there for about half an hour until the tornado warning ended. By 9:25 p.m., delegates had returned to the auditorium to continue the program, which was ended after one more song amid fears of a second storm.
Boys’ State officials are looking into having Gov. Heineman speak at Saturday’s Boys’ State graduation, although nothing had been arranged by press time.
